Formation of the FOP 44 Retirees

In 1980, retired Dayton police officers - members of Capt. John C. Post Lodge No. 44 - along with several retired police officers from other agencies in Montgomery County, formed a group that regularly met at the local Lodge. It did so to unite in friendship, to encourage mutual ideas, to promote the retirees' welfare and to safeguard the lawful rights and benefits of the retirees' pensions. On July 15, 1980, the retired police officers adopted a simple Constitution as the foundation for their association.

In a display of solidarity two decades later, Capt. John C. Post Lodge No. 44 adopted an amendment to its Lodge Constitution & Bylaws (ARTICLE XX), formally validating this significant segment of its membership - 400+ members retired from law enforcement careers that have distinct interests and unique issues meriting representation of a special nature. And so on August 13, 2003, in accordance with the Constitution of the FOP of Ohio, the Dayton Fraternal Order of Police officially recognized an associated fraternity within its local Lodge...the FOP 44 Retirees

Objectives of the FOP 44 Retirees

The FOP 44 Retirees' aims are to advance respect for law and order and to unite its members in friendship. It has as its primary objectives to promote and protect the benefits of police officer pensions and to better the mutual welfare of its members. As its core, the FOP 44 Retirees continue to support the goals and objectives of the local Lodge and to be advocates for, and unite in friendship with, their brother and sister officers who are still engaged in active careers in law enforcement.

Membership in the FOP Retirees

The membership of the FOP 44 Retirees is comprised of individuals from the City of Dayton, Montgomery County and State of Ohio who are honorably retired on service or disability pension or who have other qualifications as prescribed in the local Lodge's Constitution.

Membership in FOP 44 Retirees is open to all retired full-time law enforcement officers who meet the qualifications as specified in the Retirees' and Lodge's Constitutions. Anyone in this category can petition for membership, however, the petition must be approved at the next meeting by a majority vote of the members who are present.

FOP 44 Retirees members are entitled to receive the "Aegis" newsletter monthly, to vote at Retiree meetings and to participate in Lodge social activities.

Operating Guidelines for the FOP 44 Retirees

The FOP 44 Retirees governs its affairs based on a Constitution of articles defining its objectives, dues, officers and meetings. Its Constitution has been submitted to the local Lodge and is in compliance with the Constitution of the Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio, Inc.  It may not adopt or operate under a constitution or bylaws in conflict with the articles of incorporation, constitution or bylaws of the local Lodge, State Lodge or National Lodge.

The FOP 44 Retirees have duly elected officers, one of whom serves a two-year term on the local Lodge’s Executive Board as the Trustee Emeritus (retired). The officers of the FOP 44 Retirees consist of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, two (2) Trustees and the Immediate Past President.

Relationship with the Local Lodge

The FOP 44 Retirees supports the local Lodge through hands-on work to compose, sort and distribute the Lodge's newsletter (the "Aegis"), through active participation in work details to improve the appearance of the Lodge premises, through active involvement in fund-raisers and social events, and in many other ways - for example, it did so by erecting the flagpole at the front of the Lodge so U.S., State and FOP flags are flown.

In addition, the Trustee Emeritus (retired), who serves on the local Lodge Executive Board, is the liaison between the Lodge’s retired membership and the local Lodge. He has voice and vote on issues that affect the Lodge, similar to all other Lodge Executive Board members, with one notable exception. The Trustee Emeritus (retired) has voice but no vote on collective bargaining issues or related matters.

It is important to the membership of the FOP 44 Retirees that it be a voice of experience for, and join in fraternity with, its fellow Lodge members who have active law enforcement careers. The retirees do so with a prayer that every police officer has a full career and depart police service as a credit to the profession and predecessors, and with enough good will to join his brothers and sisters in the FOP 44 Retirees.

The FOP 44 Retirees Meetings

The FOP 44 Retirees meetings are held at 7:30 p.m. on the third (3rd) Tuesday of the month at the FOP 44 Lodge Hall, located at 4275 Powell Road , Huber Heights , Ohio , unless otherwise specified.  All meetings are held on an informal basis; however, if a question arises of parliamentary procedure, then “Robert’s Rules of Order” is invoked.
